Southeast County
Escaping the roar of race cars and airplane engines can be difficult
at certain times of the year.
At the western edge of the southeast Shawnee County region is Heartland
Park Topeka, which hosts the National Hot Rod Association Nationals
each October. Other events, such as NASCAR trucks and dirt week, also
use the facility throughout the year.
Commercial air service is available at Forbes Field, which is adjacent
to Heartland Park. USAirways Express has daily commuter flights to
Kansas City International Airport.
Escaping the noise often isn't difficult, considering the roar of
racing occurs only a few days each year and southeast Shawnee County
is a largely rural area. The Combat Air Museum and Kansas National
Guard also are located nearby.
Lake Shawnee is located outside the Topeka city limits just north
of the southeast Shawnee County region. The area also includes Monmouth
Township and the community of Berryton. Much of the region is in the
Shawnee Heights school district.
One of the oldest settlements in the county, Tecumseh, served as the
county seat of Shawnee County in the 1850s. The community is located
along the Kansas River east of Topeka and offers a New England feel,
similar to other small communities in the southern county region.
Tecumseh was once a slave-owning district before the Civil War and
has several old, stone buildings in the surrounding area. A rural,
scenic road that winds through the hills and woods eventually leads
to the historic community.
