Northern County
An apple seedling business that operated out of northern Shawnee County
supplied fruits to residents are far as Washington and New York.
The region was home to Oakwood Farms, which was one of the county's
oldest farmsteads. From their large, Victorian home, the Tanner family
grew young apple trees and sold them throughout the United States.
The farmhouse still exists, but the business has since departed.
Although the farmhouse is in present-day Shawnee County, the area
didn't always bear that designation. Much of the northern region actually
was part of Calhoun County, until the area became known as Shawnee
County in the 1850s. The area is home to Soldier and Menoken townships.
Soldier also was home to arctic explorer Charles Kilmer.
The region is located near Jefferson County and served by US-75 highway
to the west and US-24 highway to the south. The area north of Topeka
has experienced growth in recent years, including a new shopping center
near along N.W. 46th near US-75. Several subdivisions also have sprung
up in the region.
Much of the area is included in the Seaman school district.
